Usability As A Personal Speaker

Let me first start off by saying this JBL Wind 3S Is not technically intended to be a “Personal Speaker”. JBL advertises it as a bike Speaker that is attached to your bike or scooters handlebars pointing at the riders face when in use. I however have found this little speaker to be a very nice personal speaker to carry around on my belt when working the farm.

(Fun Fact: JBL and this speakers manufacturer HARMAN KARDON are both owned by Samsung Electronics)

Let’s face it, the Bluetooth speaker world is VERY overrun by companies nowadays. Especially overseas companies claiming good quality when they deliver far less. While JBL is manufactured in China we all know their speaker quality of the highest tiers even with their smaller speakers and the price reflects this. Anyhow let’s jump back to the usability of the JBL Wind 3S. If you do not know there is also the JBL WIND 3 that has some more features compared to the (in my opinion) more durable and cheaper Wind 3S.

My Personal Uses

I work on a farm and am a major DIY person. Life doesn’t slow down when farming or wrenching. I need something that I can slap on my person and go, much like my Leatherman Multitool seen next to the Bluetooth Speaker in the pictures. The clip works great for a belt or even just sliding over your pants, overalls, or maybe a pocket. I personally like having it down on my side as when I bend down to work it doesn’t interfere with my routine movements. So far working on lawn mowers, getting on my hands and knees, walking around. This little speaker just stays along for the ride. It is also not super heavy like my Leatherman so it doesn’t really drag on my belt all that bad.

Obviously if your using this for bicycle handlebars I would assume it works great. The bar clip shown in the pictures is of pretty decent construction. I am sure if you really wrenched on it or it got pushed on to hard it would either break or pop off it’s clip. I can’t imagine that would happen super often. Now if your are using it for say down hill mountain biking, It probably would not last that long with super intense vibration and shock.

I have also found I enjoy just using this JBL as a plain old Bluetooth Speaker. Its get plenty loud to destroy itself in short order and has very crisp quality at around 1/2 sound. It will get dirty with the fabric front and matte plastic finish on the back.

Durability & Materials

Let’s take a quick look into the Wind 3S build quality. I do want to say that the JBL WIND 3 has the added features of a lcd screen, FM Radio, SD Card Port, and AUX Port. Most users will not usually be using any of these over Bluetooth but I do like the idea of an AUX plugin. My only worry with the WIND 3 is that the screen would scratch in short order. I also want to say that JBL makes actual personal Speakers with clips. I personally like the design of the JBL WIND 3S. The front of the speaker is a knit together fabric material with a black backer underneath to really make the red pop, hide the speaker and probably diminish dust and water intrusion being IP67.

The buttons are a sort of firm but soft to the touch rubber with actual buttons underneath each icon. They look to have been melted or clued onto the face of the speaker fabric while the side buttons are part of the actual matte red plastic. These Small Bluetooth Speakers also come in a verity of colors including, White, Black, Blue, Red.

Looking online at reviews the bike handlebar mounts seem to be a weak spot as well as the back clip on the speaker. While this is not a surprise I have to wonder what people are doing with these. I am sure I could snap the back clip right off with some good pressure but who is doing that? I take life slow and when wearing it on my side I really can’t see breaking it other than hooking it on something. I have a lot of insight into this because of wearing a multitool on my side. Sure some days I might drag it across something or get it slightly hooked. We are talking about a rugged multitool vs a speaker for listening to music or podcasts. All in All This speaker is really growing on me with each day I use it. The ease of use and minimal buttons keep it simple and fast to use.

The song skip buttons are on the sides, volume up, down, play, pause on the front. On and off as well as Bluetooth sync on top and that is it! This JBL speaker will for sure be in my garage tool set whenever I am working or not wanting constant disconnecting of Bluetooth signal when I walk away with my phone.

Conclusion

All In All this little speaker does pack a pretty good punch. It’s nothing crazy loud but it doesn’t need to be nor is it tying to be a loud speaker. With the included charging cable, handlebar rubber padding, and handlebar mount for the price the quality is very nice as well as the colors. A lot of people online agree with me that the quality is decent and being a JBL is should be. I will for sure keep using this speaker for personal use and maybe the occasional bike ride or morning walk.
