As someone who does almost everything himself, tools are my lifeline to keep my equipment running, my house functioning, and my projects going. This Stanley Automotive Tool Set has been truly epic for me!
Having been raised to do everything yourself requires a vast amount of tools. The biggest most versatile tool set you can have is an Automotive set with mixed SAE and Metric sockets and wrenches. I have used my Stanley 92-839 99 Piece set for over 5 years not going probably 3 days without needing it. I would say I have some insight into whether it’s worth the cash or not.
All You Need In One Set
My 1977 Ford F250 is a simple truck, requiring simple tools. With almost no electronics or metric sizes it’s a breeze to work on, and cheap too! I do have to say there have been very few times I have needed to get a size this set does not have to work on my truck. Having a black chrome coating with laser etched sizes means no wearing off numbers! The Small Plastic case with slots means not having sockets rolling around loose. It has some flaws and I will get to those but for now let’s run through all that this Stanley set has to offer.

Tool Kit Quality After Over 5 Years Of Use
I am a self made DIY mechanic, carpenter, farmer, electronics DIYer and so much more. But first and foremost I have been raised in the field of turning wrenches. Being raised on a farm with a Grandpa and Father who both share a passion in mechanics I took to it quite well. Especially working on older yard equipment as you can see on my YouTube Channel. I got this Stanley Automotive tool set because I needed something portable and yet with lots of different sizes for working on whatever wherever.
I drive a 1977 Ford F250 and as you could imagine its a very simple vehicle to both operate and work on. Same with my many vintage Garden Tractors, Lawn Mowers, and full sized tractors. For a short period of time I even did mobile small engine mechanic work. All this being said I have a VERY good idea if this Stanley 92-839 set is worth it’s money.
The quality is pretty amazing for the price. It does have some drawbacks that I will talk about below but let’s talk about what I have found to stand out in it’s quality. The black chrome finish is an awesome look paired with laser etched letters, it can’t be beat. The rust has been a minimum with this kit and I have left it outdoors in rain and snow. The only things that showed signs of rust are the ratchets because the water is able to sit inside the heads and slowly rust. The ratchets have been amazing, I use both the 3/8 and the 1/4 often and have really no complaints except the occasional catching because of me leaving them in the weather. These are not impact rate however I have used them for light impact use with a 1/2 to 3/8 adapter. They do the job for light impact stuff but are not near thick enough to be used as such on a daily basis. Also being 6 point sockets the rounding off of bolt heads has been almost nonexistent.
Some Drawbacks
Let’s run through the negative and/or the weak points I have noticed while using this kit.
- The Plastic Case Hinge Failed Within 4 years. I did open and close this tool set A LOT. I wanted something that I could store away at the end of each job. Opening and closing caused the plastic hinge to fail. This happens on most plastic sets with time. Remember how much I use this set as well.
- A couple sockets fall out of their holders. This is very common with blow molded cases like this Stanley set has. It however is nothing compared to some other kits. When it’s cold out maybe 3 sockets have a tendency to fall out. When it’s 90 sitting in the sun a lot fall out.
- The tools get HOT in the sun. Because of the nice black chrome finish the sockets love to soak up all the sun rays making them very hot.
- The ratchets are sticky after having water in them. I have cleaned them out but this is to be expected when rust gets into the metal.
- The finish can wear off with really high use against metal.
- Missing 12mm Wrench
Conclusion
I LOVE using this kit. After using some plastic sheet and screws to make my own DIY hinge I have this Stanley set open honestly multiple times a day. I have used this weekly if not daily for over the past 5 years, probably not going 72 hours without opening it and using it. If your looking for an impact set look elsewhere but if your looking for a good weekend kit and even heavy use set (In My Case), this set can’t be beat. With very balanced SAE and Metric sockets and wrenches It really covers just about everything I do and the best thing of all? It’s compact, not super heavy, and has great locking hasps that have showed really zero signs of breaking or wear. There are other reviews on the Stanley’s website as well that echo the same things I have said here today. Stanley also have a fantastic warranty of their tools. I will continue to use this set as well as look into some of Stanley’s other Automotive sets as well.
